Here is a little 5x7 inch watercolor I painted February 8. These are orchids called ascocendas, or foxtail orchids, with lots of them on one branch and usually in pinks, white or reds. Many times they have little polka dots like these do. Always a cheerful little subject especially since many of them bloom in the dead of winter! Available for $35.00, matted and mounted on lightweight board and ready for a frame!
I have enjoyed drawing and painting all my life, and have loved orchids for forty years, ever since I saw my first cattleya orchid plant at a plant nursery in Dallas.
In those days, it was rare to see a live orchid plant, much less with blooms on it! I was enthralled and set about learning all I could about the vast tribe of orchid species as quickly as possible. I studied every book I could find and started collecting plants immediately.
I eventually had three greenhouses and bought and sold orchids for several years in the Dallas area before moving to Arizona and later to Washington State. My interest in orchids lay dormant for a number of years while I pursued other interests and responsibilities.
Finally, in 2006, after starting up my watercolor painting again in Florida, I renewed my acquaintance with the great tribe of orchids and began to paint the flowers I so love.
I am a member of the Florida Watercolor Society and will be showing some of my work in their annual show this September, 2010.
I retain copywright privileges to all my images.
Drumbeat cattleyas are my all-time favorite orchid. They really are ambassadors for the entire orchid tribe in my opinion. They show all the best qualities one imagines when thinking of a classic orchid flower. Fun to paint, too! This picture is an 11x15 watercolor painting on Arches 300# cold press paper. The original is for sale. $200.00. Cards, T-shirts and prints also available
Lively red blossoms!
Red cattleyas -- SOLD
These gorgeous red cattleyas command everyone's attention with their gaudy color and lively attitude. I enjoyed painting this picture more than any other to date. It is a 15x22 inch watercolor painting on Arches 300# cold press bright white paper. The original is sold, but prints and cards are available.
Lovely laelia purpurata
Laelia Purpurata is an easy-to-grow species that is the parent of many brassolaeliocattleya hybrids. I love the grace of the blooms and the fact that a mature plant can literally have hundreds of blooms open on it at one time. What a show! Another inspiration from a photographer/orchidist acquaintance in Mexico. The painting is 15x22 inches, done in watercolor on Arches 300# cold press bright white paper. The original is available for $450.00. Prints and cards also available.
Cattleya Walkeriana comes from Brazil and is greatly prized as a good example of a "blue" flowered orchid. They are reasonably easy to grow and are popular here in Florida. The inspiration for this painting came from a photographer/orchidist acquaintance in Mexico. The painting is 15x22, done in watercolor on Arches 300# cold press natural color paper. The original is available for $450.00. Cards and prints also available.
This is a 15x22 inch watercolor painting on Arches 300# cold press natural color paper. The foxtail orchid is also known by its proper name of rhynchostylis gigantea. It is a native of Indonesia, but is very popular here in Florida as a garden plant. The "tails" of flowers can be two feet long and the blossoms are very fragrant. This original watercolor is for sale. $450.00. Cards and prints also available.
This is a 22x30 inch watercolor painting on Arches 300# cold press natural color paper. The inspiration for the painting comes from a photographer/orchidist acquaintance. I love the way the flowers seem to dance across the page, so happily! This original painting is available for $600.00. Prints and cards also available.
Goldenzelle BLC orchids
Goldenzelle Cattleya Orchids
This 22"x 30"painting was done on Arches 300# cold press natural color paper with a variety of professional quality watercolor paints. The inspiration came from a photographer/orchidist acquaintance. I especially love the soft colors of this orchid and its round shape. Having the plants in pots adds a homey touch to a tropical subject, I think. I can just imagine this bunch of plants on my sunporch! This original painting is available for $600.00.
